The Bounty of Autumn: Black Walnut Harvesting Season
As the leaves begin to change and a crispness fills the air, it signals the arrival of one of the most anticipated times for local homesteaders: black walnut harvesting season. Black walnuts, with their rich flavor and numerous health benefits, are a prized addition to any pantry. This blog post will guide you through the essentials of harvesting, processing, and enjoying these autumn treasures.
Identifying Black Walnut Trees
Before you can harvest black walnuts, you need to know how to identify the trees. Black walnut trees (Juglans nigra) are typically found in rich, well-drained soil and can grow up to 100 feet tall. Their leaves are compound with 15-23 leaflets, and the bark is dark and deeply furrowed. The nuts themselves are encased in a thick, green husk which turns black as it matures.
When to Harvest
Timing is crucial when it comes to harvesting black walnuts. The best time to collect them is in the fall, usually during the month of October. You'll know they're ready when the husks begin to fall off the tree with little resistance. It's important to gather them quickly before wildlife gets to them or they start to decay on the ground. To harvest black walnuts, simply pick them up off the ground. Wearing gloves is highly recommended, as the husks can stain your hands.
